Colchicine, an alkaloid, was extracted from the genus Colchicum, also known as colchicine.
Pure colchicine is yellow needle-like crystal with a melting point of 157 °C. Soluble in water, ethanol, and chloroform. It is bitter and poisonous. Colchicine inhibits mitosis, destroys the spindle, and causes chromosomes to stagnate in the middle of the division.
This abnormal division caused by colchicine is called colchicine mitosis. In such mitosis, although the chromosome is split, the cells do not divide and cannot form two daughter cells, thereby doubling the chromosome.
Since 1937, American scholar A.F. Blakeslee and others have succeeded in the cytology, genetics research and plant breeding after the success of colchicine and doubling the chromosome number of plants such as mandala.
Colchicine was first extracted by two French chemists PS Pollett and J. Cavalton in 1820. There is also a saying that colchicine was discovered in 1937.
