Liver X receptors (LXRs) are ligand-activated transcription factors that are primarily activated by oxysterols and cholesterol metabolites. As such, LXRs play an important role in the regulation of cholesterol, lipid, and carbohydrate metabolism. There are two known isoforms of LXR: LXRα and LXRβ. LXRβ is ubiquitously expressed in all tissues while LXRα is primarily expressed in the liver, adipose tissue, small intestine, and macrophages. LXRs are currently being examined as potential therapeutic targets in the treatment of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimers disease, obesity, and atherosclerosis.
